Assessing temperature dependence of T1 in cortical bone using ultrashort echo-time MRI

چکیده
Background/introduction MR-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation is a promising, noninvasive method for treatment of bone tumors and palliation of pain. During thermal therapy, temperature mapping is necessary to ensure proper heat deposition in targeted tumors as well as to prevent undesired heating in healthy tissues. However, conventional proton resonance frequency-based MR thermometry cannot be applied in cortical bone due to its short T2* relaxation time. Recently, it was shown that ultrashort echo-time MRI can be used to assess T1 change in cortical bone due to temperature change (Han M, ISMRM 2014, P262). This work focused on characterization of temperature dependence of T1 in cortical bone by performing a calibration experiment.

Measurement of T1 of the Ultrashort T2* Components in White Matter of the Brain at 3T
Recent research demonstrates that white matter of the brain contains not only long T2 components, but a minority of ultrashort T2* components. Adiabatic inversion recovery prepared dual echo ultrashort echo time (IR-dUTE) sequences can be used to selectively image the ultrashort T2* components in white matter of the brain using a clinical whole body scanner. The T2*s of the ultrashort T2* compo...
متن کاملCortical Bone Perfusion Assessment using Inversion Recovery Ultrashort TE Imaging
Target Audience: Musculoskeletal Radiologists, Bone Metabolism Researchers Purpose: Perfusion MRI studies of vertebral trabecular bone have shown a direct relation between bone perfusion and remodeling activity. Trabecular bone studies have also shown that decreases in vascularity and perfusion may contribute to increased fracture risk in older individuals. To date, perfusion MRI of the cortica...
متن کاملEffect of Echo Time on the Maximum Relationship between Contrast Agent Concentration and Signal Intensity Using FLAIR Sequence
Introduction Contrast-enhanced fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) is one of the MRI sequences that can be used for detection and evaluation of pathological changes in the brain. In this work, we have studied the effect of different echo times (TE) on the maximum relationship between signal intensity and concentration of the contrast agent using the FLAIR sequence. Materials and Methods...
متن کاملUltrashort echo time magnetization transfer (UTE-MT) imaging of cortical bone.
Magnetization transfer (MT) imaging is one way to indirectly assess pools of protons with fast transverse relaxation. However, conventional MT imaging sequences are not applicable to short T2 tissues such as cortical bone. Ultrashort echo time (UTE) sequences with TE values as low as 8 µs can detect signals from different water components in cortical bone. In this study we aim to evaluate two-d...
متن کاملMRI-based attenuation correction for PET/MRI using ultrashort echo time sequences.
UNLABELLED One of the challenges in PET/MRI is the derivation of an attenuation map to correct the PET image for attenuation. Different methods have been suggested for deriving the attenuation map from an MR image. Because the low signal intensity of cortical bone on images acquired with conventional MRI sequences makes it difficult to detect this tissue type, these methods rely on some sort of...
